San Diego chiropractor, Dr. Steve Tullius is focused on providing chiropractic care for infants and children.
While he does care for entire families and adult individuals as well, his practice focus is upon this unique population because he believes it is crucial to maintain optimal neurological and structural balance throughout these important developmental periods for optimal health, function and well-being.
Most parent have many great questions when it comes to any healthcare decision for their child. I personally know that we researched and interviewed several pediatric dentists before selecting one to provide care for our son.
I would expect no different from parents looking to bring their child to a chiropractor.
While I am always happy to communicate over the phone prior to an initial consultation, here are some of the common questions and additional information all parents deserve to understand when making this important decision.
Why does my child need to be checked by a chiropractor?
Some parents might be wondering why their child needs a chiropractic evaluation. This question is best answered by bringing awareness to the potential for spinal injuries that commonly occur with the birth process or as the child is learning to walk.
According to Dr. Abraham Towbin in Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology, “The birth process even under optimal controlled conditions is potentially a traumatic, crippling event for the fetus… During the final extraction of the fetus, mechanical stress imposed by obstetrical manipulation–even the application of standard orthodox procedures may prove intolerable to the fetus.” 1
The pressure, force and twisting of the head and neck that occurs at birth can place considerable strain on the delicate nerves, muscles and ligaments in this region. In two separate studies looking into the rate of occurrence of spinal trauma, it was found that trauma of various degrees to the head and neck occurs in 80-90% of newborns. 2, 3
Because birth trauma is a very real potential problem with even the most natural birth, it is extremely important that infants be checked by a doctor trained in the detection of these problems.
The chiropractor who specializes in the care of infants and children is specially trained to detect structural and neurological imbalances and provide care to address those imbalances.
Dr. Tullius has been a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association for over 10 years, has undergone numerous continuing education in this area of practice and is also currently enrolled in a 200 hour program dedicated specifically to the care of infants and children.
Is chiropractic care safe for infants and children?
Chiropractic care for infants and children has been shown to be exceedingly safe for children of all ages as well as adults. 4, 5, 6
Can chiropractic help my child with colic, digestive issues, ear infections, developmental delays, etc.?
After birth, many infants experience difficulty breast feeding, colic, digestive issues, torticollis (head stuck to one side), failure to thrive, and delays in crawling, sitting and walking.
These problems are all signs of dysfunction and may be associated with structural injuries impacting the nervous system. While the purpose of chiropractic is never to treat conditions or diseases, addressing structural and neurological dysfunction can have a wide impact on our overall health, healing and well-being.
The exact changes for each child cannot be known, however, a child, or adult for that matter, is always better off without structural and neurological imbalance.
Will my child grow out of it?
Stressed and worried parents are commonly told their children will “grow out of it.”
The truth is, children do not grow out of things. They grow IN to them.
By neglecting problems at birth and early development, we are potentially setting our children up for a lifetime of more deeply ingrained patterns that can develop in to chronic problems.
This is why more and more parents are choosing to have their infants and children checked soon after birth and at various developmental milestones by a chiropractor.
Because Dr. Tullius is focused on the care of infants, toddlers and children, his office is especially equipped to care for them in a warm, caring, nurturing and fun environment.
